CYPRUS COMMUNITY OF NSW

58-76 Stanmore Road STANMORE

Inner West Hawks FC

Inner West Hawks FC (previously Stanmore Hawks FC)

Inner West Hawks FC and Stanmore Hawks Football Club were founded in 1978 by the Greek-Cypriot Community of Sydney, originally playing under the name “Cyprus United”.

The club was created by a group of young men who came to Australia to start a new life and sought friendship within the Cypriot Community. Their aim was to play at the highest level possible and at the same time, provide the younger and future generations with hope, mentorship and ambition.

In 1985, the Club was introduced into the New South Wales Inter Urban Division Five. The first season saw the Club win two-thirds of their matches, finishing with 12 wins and gaining promotion. An astonishing seven consecutive promotions followed.

Starting the 1990 season in the NSW 3rd Division, Stanmore Hawks FC went on to win the league and gain promotion to the NSW 2nd Division, also known as the NSW Super League.

In 1992, the club experienced a great season, winning the league and gaining promotion to the top tier of football for the 1993 season, the NSW Premier League.

After finishing 9th in 1993 and 12th 1994, Stanmore Hawks FC finished 14th in the 1995 season, winning five games and drawing six, but it wasn’t enough to save the Club from relegation, sending the Club back to the second division of NSW Football. The Club remained stagnated in the NSW Super League for the next decade but eventually fell to third division in 2007, otherwise known as State League.

A restructure of the competition format by Football NSW in 2013 effectively relegated Stanmore Hawks FC again to the NSW State League Division 2. Despite losing the first match in 2013, the club dominated the league, winning 16 games and scoring 66 goals in the process, one quarter of which were scored in a 16-0 victory.

Stanmore Hawks FC were crowned the leagues Premiers and Champions, winning the Grand Final 1-0 against Fairfield City. Stanmore Hawks FC have since remained a constant threat in what has now become the National Premier League (NPL) 3 NSW League. With hard work and effort paying off in 2019 the Club reclaimed the NPL 3 Premiers Title after finishing on top of the league ladder at the end of the regular season with 60 points in 26 games, scoring 72 goals and conceding only 27.

In 2021 Stanmore Hawks FC changed its name to Inner West Hawks FC to expand its player reach to all suburbs of the inner west (post council amalgamations).
